Texas Math Scholar is designed to support your students’ mastery of the new STAAR eligible TEKS through interactive notebook activities, cooperative learning, and assessment tools. The included learning materials can be used for review and/or intervention. In accordance with the new state assessment standards, the mathematical process standards are embedded throughout the learning materials to enhance the effectiveness of the tools. The learning activities may be used to support student learning of specific content in a whole class, small group, or intervention setting.
Interactive Notebook Activities
Each TEKS standard’s learning materials include an interactive notebook page to support student understanding of the standard. Each activity is designed to be a learning activity in and of itself. The activity is intended to have enough information so that students can use the single page as a review of the skill. Many of the activities are cut-and-paste tasks that will also provide some tactile learning opportunities.
“Sum It Up” Writing Task
Each interactive notebook page includes a writing task. This portion is meant to be a reflection piece. It allows students to make sense of the standard in their own words. The “Sum It Up” task is a summary of the learning and addresses the big ideas of the standard.
Cooperative Learning Activities
Each TEKS standard’s learning materials include a cooperative learning activity. These fun and engaging tasks are designed to be completed as a whole class, in small groups, or in partners. They provide an additional opportunity for students to practice the skill and receive feedback from other students. The cooperative learning activities are designed to require students to work together, demonstrate accountability, participate equally, and be actively engaged.
Multiple-Choice Formative Assessment
Each TEKS standard’s learning materials also include a multiple-choice formative assessment to evaluate student mastery of the standard. There are 5 questions for each skill. In accordance with the assessment standards for STAAR, the mathematical process standards are embedded throughout the assessments. The embedded TEKS are identified on the “STAAR Dual-Coded Question Guide.” A performance tracking sheet is included to help students track their own progress toward mastery of the TEKS.
