The next most popular blog post, again from my Understanding Fractions series, is an article that I wrote about benchmark fractions. Understanding how to use benchmark fractions to estimate, compare, and visualize with fractions helps students make better connections between the value of a fraction and its formal fraction notation. I can’t tell you how many times I hear of teachers using tricks and mathematically unsound techniques to teach fraction skills. If we help students understand the relative sizes of fractions and the “rules” for operating with them, like using common denominators, students will begin to make sense of fractions and interact with them differently. Benchmark Fractions is a great way to support your students’ understanding of fractions and includes a free download. Check it out!
